JEE Advanced 2026: Official Announcement by IIT Roorkee

IIT Roorkee, the organizing institute for JEE Advanced 2026, has released the official exam details. This is the complete, verified guide — not rumour or coaching speculation.

Key Dates

Event Date
JEE Advanced 2026 Exam May 17, 2026 (Sunday)
Registration for Indian Nationals April 23, 2026
Registration for Foreign Nationals April 6, 2026
Admit Card Release ~May 12, 2026

Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 are held on the same day in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode — Paper 1 in the morning and Paper 2 in the afternoon.

Eligibility: Who Can Register

To register for JEE Advanced 2026, you must satisfy all five conditions:

1. JEE Main 2026 Rank

You must be among the top 2,50,000 candidates (all categories combined) in JEE Main 2026. The cutoff from past years:

  • General: ~88–91 percentile
  • OBC-NCL: ~76–80 percentile
  • SC: ~54–58 percentile
  • ST: ~44–48 percentile

These are not guaranteed cutoffs — they shift each year based on difficulty and number of candidates.

2. Age Limit

Born on or after October 1, 2001 (for GEN/OBC-NCL). SC/ST/PwD candidates get a 5-year relaxation — born on or after October 1, 1996.

3. Number of Attempts

Maximum 2 attempts in consecutive years. If you appeared in JEE Advanced 2025, 2026 is your last attempt. If 2026 is your first attempt, you still have one more in 2027.

4. Earlier Admission

You should NOT have accepted a seat at an IIT previously (via JoSAA) in any year. Reporting to an IIT and then leaving still counts as "seat accepted."

5. Class XII Performance

No minimum percentage is required to appear in JEE Advanced. However, for admission to IITs, you must secure at least the top 20 percentile in your Class XII board OR 75% marks (65% for SC/ST/PwD) — whichever is easier.

Registration Fee

Category Fee
General, OBC-NCL ₹3,200
Female, SC, ST, PwD ₹1,600
Foreign Nationals (SAARC) USD 90
Foreign Nationals (non-SAARC) USD 180

Payment is online only. There is no late fee option — once registration closes, no extensions are granted.

JEE Advanced 2026 Exam Pattern

Paper 1 and Paper 2 are both 3 hours each. Combined marks: typically 360 total (180 per paper).

Question types (can vary per IIT):

  • Single correct MCQ — partial/full negative marking
  • Multiple correct MCQ — partial marks for partially correct answer, full negative for wrong
  • Integer type — 0 to 9, no negative marking
  • Matrix Match / Paragraph-based — bundled questions sharing a common passage

The most important thing to know: multiple correct MCQ questions are where most students lose marks. If you mark only some of the correct options, you get partial marks. But if you mark even one incorrect option, you lose marks. The strategy is to never guess on multiple-correct questions — attempt only if you are very confident.

8-Week Preparation Timeline (Post JEE Main Session 2 Results)

Weeks 1–2: Diagnostic and Reset

  • Thoroughly analyse both Session 1 and Session 2 JEE Main papers
  • Identify chapters where you are losing marks due to concept gaps vs. calculation errors
  • These are different problems with different solutions

Weeks 3–5: Advanced-Level Chapter Revision

  • Calculus (Limits, Continuity, Differentiation, Integration): JEE Advanced calculus is 2–3 difficulty levels above JEE Main
  • Physical Chemistry (thermodynamics, electrochemistry, chemical equilibrium) — very computation-heavy
  • Inorganic chemistry (coordination chemistry, metallurgy) — direct factual questions

Weeks 6–7: Previous Year Papers (2007–2025)

  • Attempt papers under timed conditions, full syllabus
  • Do not cherry-pick topics — Advanced papers test unexpected cross-chapter connections
  • Each paper should be followed by a minimum 2-hour review session

Week 8: Mock Tests and Strategy Refinement

  • 2 full mocks per week, strict timing
  • Finalize your section-wise time allocation strategy
  • Reduce new content, increase review of marked problems

Important: JEE Advanced vs. JEE Main Difficulty

The difficulty gap between JEE Main and JEE Advanced is substantial and often underestimated. Students who score 95%+ in JEE Main sometimes struggle in JEE Advanced preparation because:

  1. JEE Main can often be solved by formula substitution. JEE Advanced requires understanding the derivation and exception cases.
  2. JEE Advanced questions frequently combine 2–3 chapters in a single problem.
  3. The marking scheme punishes careless guessing far more severely.

If you are aiming for the IITs, treat JEE Advanced preparation as a different exam entirely — not an extension of JEE Main preparation.
