JEE Main 2027 Eligibility Criteria — The Definitive Guide
JEE Main eligibility rules are simpler than most aspirants think — there is no age limit (for Main itself), no maximum attempts, and no minimum board marks for the exam itself. However, eligibility for admission to NITs/IIITs/GFTIs has additional requirements that often get confused with JEE Main eligibility.
This guide separates the two clearly so you know exactly what applies to you for JEE Main 2027.
1. Age Limit for JEE Main 2027
There is NO upper age limit to appear in JEE Main. This was a major change introduced in 2017 and continues to apply.
You can appear for JEE Main 2027 regardless of your age. However, some IITs and NITs may have age restrictions for admission — verify these separately under the relevant counselling rules.
Lower age limit: You must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) in 2025 or 2026, OR be appearing in 2027.
2. Number of Attempts Allowed
You can attempt JEE Main in 3 consecutive years after passing Class 12.
For JEE Main 2027 eligibility, you must have:
- Passed Class 12 in 2025, OR
- Passed Class 12 in 2026, OR
- Be appearing in Class 12 in 2027
Each year has 2 sessions (January + April). Both sessions in the same year count as the same year's attempt — i.e., attempting both January 2027 and April 2027 is one year of attempt, not two.
So total 6 sessions across 3 years, but with the better-of-two-sessions rule applying.
Important clarification: If you passed Class 12 in 2025 and skipped 2025 and 2026 attempts, you can still appear in 2027. The 3-year window is from your Class 12 passing year.
3. Qualifying Examination
You must have passed (or be appearing in 2027) any of the following as your qualifying exam:
- Class 12 / Higher Secondary Examination from a recognised board (CBSE, State Boards, ICSE, NIOS)
- Two-year Pre-University Examination from a recognised board
- Final examination of the 2-year course of Joint Services Wing of NDA
- Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Examination
- A Diploma recognised by AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education of at least 3 years duration
- General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London, Cambridge, or Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) Level
- High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma
Subject Combination Required
You must have studied the following as compulsory subjects in Class 12:
For B.E./B.Tech (Paper 1):
- Physics + Mathematics
- AND any one from: Chemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Biology
For B.Arch (Paper 2A):
- Physics + Chemistry + Mathematics
For B.Planning (Paper 2B):
- Mathematics
4. Minimum Marks in Class 12 — JEE Main vs Admission
For JEE Main exam itself: NO minimum marks required to appear.
For admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs: This is where the minimum marks rule kicks in.
| Category | Minimum % in Class 12 | OR | Top Percentile in Board |
|---|---|---|---|
| General/EWS/OBC-NCL | 75% aggregate | OR | Top 20 percentile of your board |
| SC/ST/PwD | 65% aggregate | OR | Top 20 percentile of your board |
Important nuance: The "top 20 percentile" rule means if your board's general candidate cutoff for the top 20% is, say, 72%, then 72% qualifies you even though you did not hit 75%. NTA publishes board-wise top 20 percentile cutoffs each year.
This rule applies for NIT/IIIT/GFTI admission through JoSAA/CSAB counselling, not for the JEE Main exam.
5. Eligibility for JEE Advanced (Top 2.5 Lakh from JEE Main)
To be eligible for JEE Advanced 2027 (and IITs):
- Be in the top 2,50,000 candidates in JEE Main 2027 across categories
- Be born on or after October 1, 2002 (for general category, 5-year relaxation for SC/ST/PwD)
- Maximum 2 attempts of JEE Advanced in 2 consecutive years
- Should not have been admitted to any IIT previously (strict rule)
- Must have passed Class 12 in 2026 or 2027
This is JEE Advanced eligibility — NOT JEE Main eligibility.
6. Nationality and Citizenship Requirements
JEE Main is open to:
- Indian citizens
- Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)
- Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs)
- Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs)
- Foreign nationals
Foreign nationals and OCIs are eligible to appear and apply for admission, but seat allocation and quotas vary. Some institutes have separate Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) routes for foreign nationals.
7. State of Eligibility (Home State Code)
When applying, you must mention your state of eligibility based on where you passed (or are appearing) in Class 12.
This determines:
- Your home state quota for participating state institutes (NITs offer 50% home state seats)
- Your eligibility for state-level engineering counselling (which uses JEE Main score)
Once selected, the state of eligibility cannot be changed during counselling.
8. Reservation Categories
JEE Main and admission counselling honour the following reservations:
| Category | Reservation Percentage |
|---|---|
| General | No reservation (open) |
| EWS | 10% |
| OBC-NCL | 27% |
| SC | 15% |
| ST | 7.5% |
| PwD | 5% (horizontal across all categories) |
Female-only supernumerary seats also exist in some institutes (typically 14-20% supernumerary).
For category benefits, you must upload a valid certificate at application stage:
- Income certificate for EWS (must be issued in 2026-27 financial year)
- OBC-NCL certificate (within validity period)
- Caste certificate for SC/ST
- Disability certificate for PwD (40%+ benchmark disability)
9. Number of Attempts — Common Misconceptions
Misconception: "I can attempt JEE Main only twice in my life." Reality: You can attempt across 3 consecutive years (6 sessions total).
Misconception: "Both sessions count as separate attempts." Reality: Both sessions in the same year count as one year of attempt.
Misconception: "Diploma holders cannot appear for JEE Main." Reality: Diploma holders can appear for JEE Main (lateral entry to engineering is separate).
Misconception: "If I take a gap year, I lose attempts." Reality: You can skip years within your 3-year window — you do not have to attempt every year.
10. Documents Required for JEE Main 2027 Application
- Class 10 mark sheet (proof of date of birth)
- Class 12 mark sheet OR admit card (if appearing in 2027)
- Aadhaar number (mandatory for Indian citizens)
- Category certificate (if applicable)
- PwD certificate (if applicable)
- Passport-size photograph (recent)
- Signature scan
- Valid email and mobile number
- Bank details (for application fee payment)
