What Changed in the JEE Main Syllabus and Why It Matters
The NTA released a reduced JEE Main syllabus in November 2023 (effective from JEE Main 2024 onwards). This same reduced syllabus continues for JEE Main 2027 — the NTA has not announced further changes for the 2027 cycle.
What the reduction means in practice:
- Roughly 18-22% of the older JEE Main syllabus has been removed or reduced across the three subjects
- The total number of chapters tested is now smaller
- Students who use pre-2024 books or coaching material risk over-preparing on removed topics
This article gives you the complete current JEE Main 2027 syllabus with explicit notes on what was removed, so you can prioritise correctly.
JEE Main 2027 Physics Syllabus
Section A — Theory (80% Weight)
Class 11 Topics
- Physics and Measurement
- Kinematics
- Laws of Motion
- Work, Energy and Power
- Rotational Motion
- Gravitation
- Properties of Solids and Liquids
- Thermodynamics
- Kinetic Theory of Gases
- Oscillations and Waves
Class 12 Topics
- Electrostatics
- Current Electricity
- Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism
- Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents
- Electromagnetic Waves
- Optics (Ray + Wave)
- Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation
- Atoms and Nuclei
- Electronic Devices
Section B — Experimental Skills (20% Weight)
The experimental skills section tests practical-style questions on instruments, vernier calipers, screw gauge, ohmmeter, simple pendulum, etc. Five questions in this section, all integer-type.
Removed/Reduced Physics Topics (Compared to Pre-2024)
- Communication Systems — completely removed
- Semiconductor Electronics — reduced to "basic concepts of diodes" only; transistor characteristics out
- Laser, optical fibre, modulation — all removed
If your reference book covers these topics, skip them entirely.
JEE Main 2027 Chemistry Syllabus
Physical Chemistry
- Some Basic Concepts in Chemistry
- Atomic Structure
- Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure
- Chemical Thermodynamics
- Solutions
- Equilibrium (Ionic + Chemical)
- Redox Reactions and Electrochemistry
- Chemical Kinetics
Inorganic Chemistry
- Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties
- p-Block Elements (Groups 13-18)
- d- and f- Block Elements
- Coordination Compounds
Organic Chemistry
- Purification and Characterisation of Organic Compounds
- Some Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry
- Hydrocarbons (Alkanes, Alkenes, Alkynes, Aromatic)
- Organic Compounds Containing Halogens
- Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen (Alcohols, Phenols, Ethers, Aldehydes, Ketones, Carboxylic Acids)
- Organic Compounds Containing Nitrogen (Amines, Diazonium Salts)
- Biomolecules
- Principles Related to Practical Chemistry
Removed/Reduced Chemistry Topics (Compared to Pre-2024)
- States of Matter — entire chapter removed
- Surface Chemistry — entire chapter removed
- General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Metals (Metallurgy) — entire chapter removed
- Hydrogen — entire chapter removed
- s-Block Elements (Alkali and Alkaline Earth) — entire chapter removed
- Environmental Chemistry — entire chapter removed
- Polymers — entire chapter removed
- Chemistry in Everyday Life — entire chapter removed
This Chemistry reduction is the single biggest change. Roughly 8 chapters from older syllabi are no longer tested. Students using pre-2023 modules from coaching institutes are over-preparing significantly.
JEE Main 2027 Mathematics Syllabus
- Sets, Relations and Functions
- Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations
- Matrices and Determinants
- Permutations and Combinations
- Binomial Theorem and its Simple Applications
- Sequence and Series
- Limit, Continuity and Differentiability
- Integral Calculus
- Differential Equations
- Coordinate Geometry (Straight Lines, Circles, Conic Sections)
- Three-Dimensional Geometry
- Vector Algebra
- Statistics and Probability
- Trigonometry
Removed/Reduced Mathematics Topics (Compared to Pre-2024)
- Mathematical Induction — removed
- Mathematical Reasoning — removed
- Statistics — partial reduction (linear regression, scatter plots removed)
- Probability — Bernoulli trials and binomial distribution — moved to "basic concepts only"
Class 11 vs Class 12 Weightage Distribution
Based on JEE Main 2024-2026 paper analysis:
| Subject | Class 11 Weightage | Class 12 Weightage |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 40-45% | 55-60% |
| Chemistry | 40% | 60% |
| Mathematics | 35-40% | 60-65% |
This means students who postpone Class 11 revision until February-March will lose 14-15 questions worth of preparation. Class 11 chapters are not optional.
Marking Scheme (Unchanged for JEE Main 2027)
Each subject in JEE Main has 30 questions:
- 20 MCQs — +4 for correct, -1 for incorrect, 0 for unattempted
- 10 Numerical/Integer questions — +4 for correct, -1 for incorrect (changed from 0 in 2023; check NTA bulletin for 2027 final rules)
Total: 90 questions, 300 marks, 3 hours.
A common mistake is treating integer questions as "free attempts". With negative marking introduced, attempt only those integer questions where you are 75%+ confident in the answer.
How to Use This Syllabus for Preparation
Step 1 — Print this syllabus and tick off chapters as you finish them
A simple checklist gives you a visual progress bar that motivates daily completion better than any productivity app.
Step 2 — Cross-check coaching material against the removed list
If your coaching module covers removed topics (Surface Chemistry, States of Matter, Communication Systems, Mathematical Reasoning), skip those chapters entirely. Use the time saved on Mechanics, Coordinate Geometry, or Organic Chemistry.
Step 3 — Spend study time proportional to weightage, not chapter count
Mechanics has 5 chapters but 25-30% of Physics weightage. Modern Physics has 3 chapters but only 10-12% weightage. Allocate accordingly.
Summary Table — JEE Main 2027 Syllabus Quick Reference
| Subject | Total Chapters | Removed Chapters (Pre-2024) | Class 11 Share | Class 12 Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 19 + Experimental | 3-4 (Communication, parts of Semiconductors) | 40-45% | 55-60% |
| Chemistry | 20 | 8 (entire chapters removed) | 40% | 60% |
| Mathematics | 14 | 2 (Math Induction, Math Reasoning) | 35-40% | 60-65% |
| Total Tested Chapters | 53 | 13-14 | — | — |
The candidates who score 99+ percentile in JEE Main 2027 will not be the ones with the largest syllabus coverage. They will be the ones with the smallest, sharpest coverage of exactly what is in this current syllabus — and zero time spent on removed topics.
Print the chapter list. Cross off chapters as you finish them. Verify your books and modules align with the post-2024 reduction. Everything else is execution.
