NEET UG 2027 Exam Pattern Overview

NEET UG 2027 will follow the same broad structure used in 2024-2026, with Biology dominating at 50% of the marks and Physics + Chemistry sharing the rest equally. This is the single largest medical entrance exam in India, with around 24 lakh candidates appearing each year.

Here is the complete pattern, marking scheme, and what 2027 aspirants should know.

NEET 2027 Pattern at a Glance

Parameter Detail
Mode Pen-and-paper (OMR-based)
Duration 3 hours 20 minutes (200 minutes)
Total Questions 200 (with 180 to be attempted)
Total Marks 720
Subjects Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology
Marking +4 correct, -1 wrong, 0 unattempted
Languages 13 (English, Hindi, and 11 regional)
Sessions Once per year (typically May)

Subject-Wise Question Distribution

Subject Section A (MCQ) Section B (Optional) Total Questions Marks
Physics 35 15 (attempt 10) 45 attempted 180
Chemistry 35 15 (attempt 10) 45 attempted 180
Botany 35 15 (attempt 10) 45 attempted 180
Zoology 35 15 (attempt 10) 45 attempted 180
Total 140 60 (attempt 40) 180 720

How Section A and Section B work:

  • Section A — 35 mandatory MCQs per subject. All must be attempted.
  • Section B — 15 questions per subject, but only 10 will be evaluated. You must attempt only 10. If you attempt more than 10, only the first 10 are counted.

This optional structure gives you flexibility — you can skip the 5 questions you find hardest in each subject's Section B without penalty.

Marking Scheme

  • Correct answer: +4 marks
  • Wrong answer: -1 mark (one-fourth negative marking)
  • Unattempted: 0 marks
  • Multiple options marked: -1 (treated as wrong)
  • Out-of-syllabus question (rare): Bonus marks awarded to all candidates

Mathematical implication: To net +4 from a coin-flip guess, you need 4 correct out of every 5 attempts (80% accuracy). At 50% accuracy, you net 1.5 marks per question. Below 50% accuracy, you lose marks.

The NEET marking scheme rewards selective attempt much more than aggressive attempt.

Time Allocation Strategy

200 minutes for 180 attempted questions = approximately 67 seconds per question. Most successful NEET strategies use uneven time distribution:

Subject Suggested Time Reasoning
Botany 30-35 minutes Mostly NCERT recall — can be done quickly
Zoology 30-35 minutes Same as Botany
Chemistry 45-50 minutes Mix of recall (Inorganic) + calculation (Physical)
Physics 60-70 minutes Most calculation-heavy, time-consuming
Buffer 10-15 minutes Re-check flagged answers, OMR transfer

Start with Biology to bank reliable marks early. Most toppers finish all 90 Biology questions in the first 60 minutes.

Subject-Wise Breakdown — What to Expect

Physics (45 questions, 180 marks)

  • 13-18 from Mechanics + Electrodynamics + Modern Physics (Tier 1)
  • 8-10 from Thermodynamics + Optics + Waves
  • 5-7 from remaining chapters
  • Avg difficulty: Moderate (lower than JEE Mains, higher than CBSE Boards)

Chemistry (45 questions, 180 marks)

  • 12-15 Physical Chemistry (Equilibrium, Thermo, Electrochem)
  • 12-15 Organic (GOC, Hydrocarbons, Functional Groups, Biomolecules)
  • 10-12 Inorganic (p-Block, Coordination, s/d-Block)

Botany (45 questions, 180 marks)

  • Plant Physiology, Reproduction, Genetics, Cell Biology dominate
  • 90% questions are NCERT-direct
  • Diagrams and tables from NCERT regularly tested

Zoology (45 questions, 180 marks)

  • Human Physiology contributes 10-14 questions alone
  • Human Reproduction, Health & Disease, Biotech are Tier 1
  • 90% questions are NCERT-direct

What Has Changed Recently for NEET 2027

2024 reform — Section B optional structure: Introduced to give candidates flexibility. You attempt 10 of 15 in each subject's Section B.

2026 anti-cheat measures: Biometric verification at exam centres, live photo match, exam city allotted by NTA (cannot be changed by candidate).

2026-27 syllabus update: Some Class 11 and Class 12 NCERT chapters were rationalised. NEET syllabus officially aligns with the updated NCERT — verify your textbook is the latest edition.

Allied Health Sciences (from 2026-27): NEET UG score is now mandatory for BPT, MLT, Radiology, Optometry, and other allied courses. This expands the pool of candidates dramatically.

NEET 2027 vs NEET 2026 — Key Differences

Aspect NEET 2026 NEET 2027

Marking +4/-1 Same
Mode Pen-and-paper Pen-and-paper (CBT under discussion but not confirmed)
Duration 3h 20min 3h 20min
Anti-cheat Biometric + Live Photo Same + tightened
Allied Health NEET-required from 2026-27 NEET-required (full year of impact)

Summary Table — NEET 2027 Exam Pattern

Component Detail
Mode Pen-and-paper (OMR)
Duration 200 minutes
Total Questions 200 (attempt 180)
Total Marks 720
Section A 35 MCQ per subject (mandatory)
Section B 15 per subject (attempt 10)
Marking +4/-1
Subjects Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology
Attempt Date First Sunday of May 2027 (expected)

Use this pattern to structure all your full-length mocks. The Section A/B split is non-trivial — practising the decision of which Section B questions to skip is itself an exam-day skill that needs deliberate training.
